Sometimes, the gift He gives us is each other

Our family has been traveling lately. As they often do, our travels unfolded in real time. We found ourselves on a Saturday night at my mom's house in Texas, which happened to be in the general area where some friends moved a while back.

A little online sleuthing gave us a pretty good indication where these friends would be for church the next morning...and it was only ten minutes away. Amazing! It seemed like a good idea to go to there and see them.

What we were not expecting when we walked into the church auditorium that Sunday morning was for our friends to start crying. Both of them.

We could not have known that moving to a new place had been so hard.

We could not have known that seeing familiar faces in a sea of new people would be life-giving to their souls.

We could not have known that just that morning she had prayed for strength and joy to make it through another day.

In their tears, I realized that what I thought of as "a good idea" or "a fun surprise" was actually a holy moment.

In some places and for some people, Jesus' prayer to "Give us today our daily bread" is a literal, daily dependence on Him for meals. We have seen that reality.

In the affluent, fast-paced, relationship-starved culture in which we now find ourselves, could it be that sometimes the daily bread He gives us is each other?

That day our friends received just enough encouragement to get through the day. Just enough surprise to know He heard their prayers.

We did not show up with words or gifts or even awareness of their need. We simply showed up.

The wonder of Christ's presence is that simple.

Sometimes, the gift He gives you and me is each other.
