We are neck-deep in the college discernment process with our oldest, which has been surprisingly delightful thus far. This past week was devoted to scholarship interviews. At one point, at a school with nearly a hundred other scholarship hopefuls, it became overwhelming to me that four out of five of these bright, accomplished, wide-eyed interviewees would be told "no" in the end. There isn't enough scholarship money to go around. I couldn't shake the feeling of scarcity, but it didn't sit right either, so I sent a group text to my Bible study friends.
Immediately they replied with Scriptures and messages like:
"The scholarship is not your source."
"Each applicant is loved. He may choose different ways to show them."
"God never runs out."
What stood out to me here is in real time my people reminded me our hope is not in this scholarship. Our hope is not even in the education it offers. Our hope is in the Lord whose Kingdom is so much bigger than I was grasping in the emotion of the moment. The interview lost its power over me before the day began. I could walk out the day in peace, wishing the best for the other applicants, trusting in the Father. For all the ills of technology, on this day it helped me live out this faith I profess. I hope you, too, have people who will point you to Christ with the tap of a screen.
